ALBANY, GA (WALB) - A college student charged with the death of a passenger in her car in a DUI crash was sentenced in an Albany court on Friday.
Albany State University student Amber Brown pleaded guilty to homicide by vehicle.
Prosecutors said she was driving with 28-year-old Damian Johnson in a Chevrolet Impala when the car hit the back of a street sweeper parked in the emergency lane of Liberty Expressway.
Brown lost control of the car in the collision, veered across the median, and stopped after the car hit a guard rail.
Johnson died in the crash and police pronounced him dead at the scene.
Prosecutors asked for the sentence to include prison time, but the judge sentenced Brown to 15 years probation.
In addition, she must attend an in-house treatment center at her own expense, and will be prohibited from alcohol during the probation period.
