Convenience clerks arrested in alcohol compliance 'check'

ALBANY, GA (WALB) -

Several convenience store clerks have been charged with selling alcohol to underage buyers, after law enforcement ran an undercover check over the weekend.

The Albany-Dougherty Drug Unit did what's called a compliance check Friday night.

They say during the holidays teen parties and teen drinking increases.

Their goal is to make sure underage teens do not have easy access to alcohol.

How they did it

The Albany-Dougherty Drug Unit used an undercover agent, under the age of 21, to purchase beer at 19 convenience stores on Friday.

Clerks at 11 stores refused sales, but another eight clerks sold alcohol to the underage agent.

Employees at three of the stores checked the agents' ID, but still sold the alcohol.

Those who sold alcohol to the underage agent were cited with misdemeanor selling alcohol to minor charges, and allowed to turn themselves in at the Sheriff's office.

"That should be a red flag, if it's in red saying 'underage' on the ID. But they just don't want to take the time, that few minutes extra, to do the math and check it out," said Sgt. Victor Camp with ADDU.

When ADDU first started compliance checks, almost 80 percent of the stores occasionally sold to the underage agent.

This time it was 42 percent, and the Agents thanked the stores that did not sell. They also said they want that number improved.

Drug agents do these compliance checks to cut down on underage drinking, and especially to cut down on drinking and driving by persons under 21.

"We hope when we do these compliance checks it puts a scare in the clerks at the store to check ID's," said Camp. "And it puts a scare into the kids, and that will reduce fatalities on the roadways."

ADDU warned they will be out doing more checks soon.
