CAIRO, GA (WALB) - The Georgia Bureau of Investigation will probe the death of a man in Cairo Police custody.
At approximately 6:20 p.m. on Friday, officers with the Cairo Police Department arrested Franklin Lee, 58, of Cairo, for Disorderly Conduct at Hardee's restaurant in Cairo.
According to Cairo P. D., Lee appeared to be intoxicated. During the arrest, Lee was sprayed with pepper spray.
He was taken to the Grady County Detention Center where he was decontaminated from the Pepper Spray and placed in a holding cell. A Grady County Jailer later found Lee unresponsive in the cell, at approximately 9:40 p.m.
Lee was transported to Grady General Hospital where he was pronounced dead at 10:19 p.m.
Steve Turner, Special Agent in Charge with the GBI, said, "The police department contacted the GBI and requested that we look into the cause of the death and the matter of the death. The autopsy has already been done, but they're waiting on trying to get some other test results to try and figure out exactly what happened."
Lee's body was transported to the GBI Crime Lab in Macon. This investigation continues.
