VALDOSTA, GA (WALB) - Former President George W. Bush speaks Thursday night at a centennial benefit dinner for Georgia Christian School.
The dinner was scheduled to take place place at the student union on VSU's main campus beginning at 5:30 p.m. WALB spoke with a Georgia Christian board member Thursday morning about the significance of having a former president attend the dinner.
He said that while they've had professional athletes and well known political figures speak at past dinners, this year's dinner really put Georgia Christian on the map.
"Stuck down here South of [Valdosta] in Dasher, a lot of people don't even know we're there after a hundred years," said centennial dinner chairman and Georgia Christian board member Ryan Warren . "This has really brought to light who Georgia Christian is, what we are, it's exposed what we stand for to so many people."
Warren added that even though two years of planning and preparation were finally over, there was still a lot to do prior to and during the dinner. "The relief hasn't set in yet because the last few days has really been crazy. But again, it has been a positive thing for this school. We'll all sit down tomorrow morning and have a cup of coffee and enjoy ourselves, but tonight there's still a lot of work to be done," Warren emphasized.
Media was given an opportunity to video part of former President Bush's speech during the dinner.
