TIFT CO., GA (WALB) - The Tift County School System is the only one in Georgia to get a Farm to School grant from the U.S. Department of Agriculture.
The system hopes to use the 39-thousand dollar award to retrofit a school bus to serve as a farm bus and rolling classroom.
Expand its canning plant to preserve local tomatoes and irrigate the school farm to expand the growing season and increase yields.
"We're excited because our students will learn where the nutritious fruits and vegetables come from and that they are grown locally and we'll be able to serve these in our cafeterias," Craig Matthews, Tift County Schools.
Tift County School officials said the grant will help students in all grade levels and the programs will start next school year.
