Fatalities rise to 10 this Thanksgiving weekend

ALBANY, GA (WALB) - The Georgia Department of Public Safety has reported a total of 10 fatalities this Thanksgiving holiday.

Georgia State Patrol reported fatalities in Cuthbert, Douglas, Statesboro, Thomasville, and Toccoa. 

GSP out of Cuthbert said a pickup truck was traveling northbound yesterday morning around 5:30 a.m. on US Highway 27. The truck driver, 61-year-old John Gibson of Perry, Florida, died when his car crossed into the southbound lanes of U.S. Highway 27 and hit the semi head on.

GSP troopers out of Thomasville said a 2001 Ford pickup truck was traveling west on GA Highway 37 in Colquitt county, Thursday morning at 3 a.m. 

When the truck traveled off the shoulder of the road, 29-year-old driver Lauren Nicole Gutbier of Colquitt county over corrected and struck a tree. 30-year-old passenger Stetson Blake Beasley of Baconton was killed in the crash. 

Both were life flighted to Tallahassee Memorial Hospital. Charges may be pending as this crash is still under investigation. 

Last year, GSP reported a total of 10 fatalities during the holiday. 

The holiday period begins the Wednesday before Thanksgiving at 6 p.m. and continues until Sunday at midnight.
