Shoppers gobble up gun sales on Black Friday

ALBANY, GA (WALB) -

Black Friday is one of the biggest sales days of the year for gun sales.

South Georgia gun sellers reported brisk sales Friday.

Backwoods Outdoors said the day after Thanksgiving usually sees gun sales double or triple.

The hottest sellers are pistols. Handguns of all shapes and calibers were purchased up by holiday shoppers. They say it's for self protection.

"This time of year that's when you got a lot of break-ins," said Backwoods Outdoors owner Jackie Sizemore. "A lot of robberies. A lot of things going on right now. A lot of pistols is what they are buying."

Another issue with these increased gun sales is overloading the federal background check system.

They have three business days to rule if the buyer is eligible, and often can't do the check, but the buyer legally gets the gun.

Dealers say having a state-issued gun carry permit cuts that problem, because you don't have to have any further check if you hold one of those.
