Viewpoint: Home Fire Preparedness

The two zip codes in Georgia that have the most fires that kill or seriously injure people aren't anywhere in metro Atlanta.  They're right here in Albany.....31701 and 31705.

The Red Cross is working to change that.

Last month, the local chapter kicked off its Home Fire Preparedness Campaign.  Boy Scouts from Troop 99 joined the door-to-door effort, handing out and installing smoke detectors in fire-prone neighborhoods.

Two days after they put up an alarm at this home on Avalon Avenue... A kitchen fire erupted while the resident was asleep.  Her new smoke detector woke her up... Likely saving her life.

We thank the Red Cross for undertaking this lifesaving effort and we praise those Boys Scouts for volunteering to help.  The Red Cross will do another neighborhood canvass in January, and we encourage more volunteers to join in.
