LOWNDES CO., GA (WALB) - Around 8 a.m. Wednesday morning a log truck overturned at the intersection of Inner Perimeter Road and U.S. 41 in Lowndes County, spilling the load of logs across the road and blocking the Northbound lanes of U.S. 41.
According to GSP Trooper Israel Hendley, the driver of the truck, 44 year-old Thomas Lamar Harper, of Ft. White, Florida, was heading South on Inner Perimeter and was preparing to slow down as he approached the intersection but lost his breaks .Before Harper could stop, the light turned green for the traffic heading North on U.S. 41, so he tried to turn onto U.S. 41 North in order to avoid going through the intersection and potentially hitting a car.
A mother and her young child were traveling North on U.S. 41 but did not see the log truck in time and were hit by the falling logs."She didn't see him in enough time to stop and when he made his turn, instead of hittin' the cars he made the turn, and then, of course, it turned the log truck over," Trooper Hendley explained.
Neither Harper nor the mother and young child were injured, but the car the mother and young child were in did sustain some damage to the right front area and the windshield had a large crack in it.
Trooper Hendley said the driver of the truck will likely be charged. "If he's got break issues with his truck," said Hendley, "he'll have charges for defective equipment. And, it's [also] either gonna be improper turn or runnin' a red light."
The truck belongs to MDS Logging, out of O'Brien, Florida. A front loader was on scene shortly after the accident to clear the logs off the road.
