IRWIN CO., GA (WALB) - An unusually high number of students are sick in Irwin County.
The School Superintendent said at least 140 students at Irwin County elementary and Middle School missed days this week with the flu, strep throat, or other illnesses.
He said pediatricians are seeing a high number of patients.
The school is offering flu vaccines and other preventive measures to fight cases.
Dr. Thad Clayton - Superintendent
"This time of the year we increase our efforts to talk about cleanliness, the use of antibacterial soap and extra hand washing. As well as with our custodial staff at this time of the year, we usually have extra occurrences of surface washing," said Irwin County Schools Superintendent Dr. Thad Clayton.
He also noted the absentee numbers were higher than previous years.
He recommends any student with the flu to stay home and get treatment from a doctor.
