ALBANY, GA (WALB) - Our chilly weather may have you thinking about starting a fire. But before you do, fire officials remind you to have your chimney checked.
Experts recommend having a professional inspect your chimney flue and other fireplace parts every year.
Albany Fire Department Captain Billy Davis says he has fought fires that started in chimneys.
"Generally they fail to follow the steps of operating them properly, by building too large of a fire, or not having them cleaned and inspected. Some other steps you'll want to take, keep carbon monoxide as well as smoke detectors installed," Davis said.
Officials recommend getting gas fireplaces inspected as well. And be sure you don't use regular wood in those fireplaces.
