Shoes from the HEART, put your best foot forward

CEO Anne Johnson Milledge CEO Anne Johnson Milledge
ALBANY, GA (WALB) - Hundreds of elementary students in southwest Georgia are in need of new pairs of shoes. That's why Albany based organization HEART is asking the community to help them give out over 500 pairs before Christmas.

According to HEART, there are over 500 children in multiple Dougherty County schools that are in need of new pairs of shoes, many who come from homes where good, quality shoes are not easy to come by.

The organization works together with local businesses, churches and individuals to give deserving children a chance to participate in physical activities they normally would not be able to join in comfortably.

CEO Anne Johnson Milledge says a new pair of shoes also brings confidence. The organization believes by becoming part of a group such as sports team or becoming a member of an after-school program, helps build leadership skills, discipline and sportsmanship.

"We're teaching children with a pair of shoes to put their best foot forward. We're saying we value you, we want you to value yourself in education," Milledge said. "So, yes, it really is a partnership with the children and us."

Milledge says she is grateful for the amount of shoes donated so far and hopes the community continues to support their cause.
