Viewpoint: Cartoon Controversy

The suspension of West Town Elementary School Principal Lee Shiver was justified after it came to light that Shiver was responsible for posting a cartoon of students.

The cartoon, posted in the teacher's break room demonstrated poor judgment by the man in charge of leading that school .

Equally disturbing is the fact that he instructed a staff member, who complied, to darken the faces of the students to depict them as Black students.

Our schools are reflections on our community, and faculty members and staff should know the influence they wield.

We support the Superintendent's disciplinary action and hope this will serve as an example to other educators that such actions are inappropriate and won't be tolerated.
