ASHBURN, GA (WALB) - The Ashburn Police Department is asking for your help to locate a violent criminal.
The Dollar General on East Washington Street was robbed at gun point, at approximately 8:50 Tuesday night. The culprit didn't actually get any money.
"I shop there a lot of times at 9 or 10 at night, never think anything about it, but now I do and I will not be doing it no more," said Catrina Carswell.
Customers were in the store when the robbery happened; the thief even bumped a customer on his way out.
"Ten minutes until 9 at night, there's still a lot of people on the street, a lot of folks doing business, and that was an extremely risky move," said Ashburn Police Chief Joe Saxon.
Robbers are choosing these retail stores as their targets more often now and it's not going unnoticed.
"I think that that's something that law enforcement is focusing on. I know the stores are aware of it. They're paying particular attention. A lot of them are revamping their security systems," said Saxon.
The robberies and burglaries are expected to increase even more as the holiday season cranks up. "My goal is that everyone actually has a safe and happy holiday season and that we're able protect our citizens and protect our business interests here locally. The biggest thing is just being out there, and being viable and being seen," said Saxon.
Some residents know the dangers, but say they can't be scared away from shopping at night.
"I prefer not to shop alone, but the robberies are right now happening in several places, and you just have to be aware of your surroundings," said Juanita Cleghorn.
