Americus names new police chief

AMERICUS, GA (WALB) - Americus officially has a new police chief.

City leaders said Duluth Deputy Chief of Police Brian Carney was the choice Monday, in a 3 to 2 vote.

Americus City Council called a meeting at 4:30 p.m. to discuss the matter.

Former Macon Police Chief T. Michael Burns was a finalist with Carney for the job.

A third finalist, South Georgia Technical College Director of Law Enforcement Center Brett Murray withdrew his name from consideration.

The job had been vacant since Mark Gerbino resigned in May of 2013
