Health Dept confirms first flu-related death

ALBANY, GA (WALB) - The Georgia Department of Public Health has confirmed that a woman in Southwest Georgia is the first person in the state to die from the flu this season.

Officials did not release the woman's name.

The Department of Public Health said they have seen a large increase in flu cases this week in Southwest Georgia.

Influenza (flu) is a contagious respiratory illness caused by influenza viruses. It can cause mild to severe illness.

Serious outcomes of flu infection can result in hospitalization or death, according to the CDC.

Some older people, young children, and people with certain health conditions, are at high risk for serious flu complications. The best way to prevent the flu is by getting vaccinated each year.

The CDC recommends an annual flu vaccine for everyone 6 months of age and older.
