Construction brings adjustments for SOWEGA holiday flyers

ALBANY, GA (WALB) - A new phase of construction is underway at Southwest Georgia Regional Airport. Bulldozers and workers have begun expansion construction on the short term parking lot and rental car lot.

In the meantime, the long term lot is the only one left for parking, which is getting some work done too. Airport officials know that space will be limited. They have set up a grass field for overflow and they are asking passengers and visitors to be cautious of where they park.

"The contractor is starting to mill and is starting to do some curb and gutter around the perimeter, so we ask people to please park as close to the center as possible, " said Yvette Aehle, Airport Director.

Another expansion is underway on the ramp on the runways to allow bigger planes and help with potential diversion flights. "Delta announced that we might be getting larger airplanes in the future," said Aehle. "We don't know how far off in the future, but while we were doing this expansion, we decided to do that expansion as well."

The airport is also making changes for night and early morning travelers. New LED lights have been installed in the last week to help brighten up the entrance and roadway.

"Definitely a lot brighter than our old ones. They all have that bright white light, so this whole place will be lit up like a Christmas tree come this holiday season."

The construction is expected to be done by the end of this year. Throughout all the changes, Airport officials say flyers should arrive early the next couple of months to avoid any unexpected holiday traveling delays.
