ASU students marches for votes

ALBANY, GA (WALB) - College students at Albany State University marched to make their vote count Tuesday.

The march called a “Blackout to the Polls” was an effort to increase student participation in voting.

They rallied on the steps of the student center then marched to the voting precinct on campus.

Since last week students have held events promoting voter participation.

“Because people did it for us, people marched for us to have this right. So it's just us honoring the right, said Gernisha Parnell.

“It's important for us to not just know that we can vote, but to exercise our right to vote so this is part of a national effort going on with campuses all over the nation,” said Ladie Mansfield.

The march was also designed to help keep the ASU voting precinct open.

If fewer than 500 people cast ballots there. The board of elections may shut it down.
