BOSTON, GA (WALB) - It's a busy time for farmers in South Georgia, but workers at a cotton gin in Boston worked with heavy hearts Tuesday as they remember their coworker who died in a tragic accident.

32-year-old Victor Chavez worked with the Boston Gin Company for nearly 10 years.

But on Friday morning, deputies said Chavez fell into the back of a trailer as he was trying to unload cotton seeds.

That's when the seeds poured on top of him, suffocating Chavez.

Thomas County Sheriff's Office Investigator Pascal Autrey said, "The cotton seed is pretty heavy, and it just took some time before they were able to find him.  I think they estimated it took about 15 to 20 minutes before they were able to get him located.  And it was just too late. "

Autrey said this accident should remind workers to review protocol to prepare for when accidents like this happen.
