ALBANY, GA (WALB) - It's daylight savings time and Albany Firefighters say now is a good time to change the batteries in your smoke alarms.
Firefighters said it's important to test your smoke alarms at least once a week to make sure that they are working properly. They say while you're changing the time every six months, it's also a good reminder to change the batteries in your smoke alarms too.
"Every six months we change our time either forward or backward. So, by doing that we tell people when you change your time, go ahead and change the batteries in your smoke detectors. The little 9 volt batteries reach up there and take them off the wall. Change your battery out and put it back on. That gives you a fresh battery every six months," said Battalion Chief Keith Ambrose, Albany Fire Department.
Firefighters say it's also important to be alert for chirping from a smoke detector, which is another signal of reminding you to change your batteries.
