THOMAS CO., GA (WALB) - Two South Georgia counties are warning residents about a scam that aims to get people to send money through gift cards.
Thomas County Sheriff's investigators and Ocilla Police say they have several reports of callers impersonating a captain with the Sheriff's Office or a utility company.
Thomas County officials said someone had been telling people they needed to load at least $250 on a Green Dot gift card and then give the number on the back of it, in order to prevent being charged for missing jury duty.
In Ocilla, residents were told they needed to complete similar actions in order to prevent utility services from being shut off.
Authorities want the public to know that these are scams.
Anyone with information on these incidents or is solicited in a similar way is asked to call police.
