ALBANY, GA (WALB) - It is now easier for kayakers and canoeists to enjoy the Flint River in Albany.

Leaders cut the ribbon on the newest kayak ramp in Riverfront Park.

There are now two ramps downtown and one upstream near the Georgia Power Dam.

They allow kayakers to get in and out of the river safely and leaders hope they'll attract more locals and tourists to the river.

The construction process took much longer than expected because of heavy rain and high water earlier this year. Downtown leaders are pleased with the outcome.

"Especially more activities a lot of people coming in town visiting or looking to do things with their family, so this is just such a great way to bring in more tourism for the downtown area," said Lanicia Hart, Chairman of ADICA Board.

"We think we are going to bring a lot people in who are avid kayakers and let them enjoy this river,' said Sharlene Cannon CEO of ADICA and Downtown Director.

The "Floating on the River" event starts Sunday at one at the north downtown ramp.

Free kayaks will be available on a first come first serve basis.

Anyone under the age of 18 must have a parent with them.
