ALBANY, GA (WALB) - An American flag goes up in flames at an elementary school... But it was all done with honor and respect.
Students at Lincoln elementary watched a flag retirement ceremony by veterans.
They explained how the flag represents our country, how to retire one properly, and why it's done this way. The flag at the school was torn and faded so it was replaced with a new flag dedicated to principal Ellen Lang's husband John Lang who served in the Navy.
Principal Lang was too emotional to speak on camera but said her husband was a man of God and country and this is an honor she will never forget.
Chairman, Army veteran and American Legion member Marvin Mixon headed up the ceremony. He says
“Anytime we can show the flag and explain to young people what it means it's a privilege and a pleasure"
And Jennifer Lewis, teacher of the year from Lincoln elementary said "we couldn't think of a better way of a more important person to give it to at this time, Mr Lang and his wife are very much loved by us."
John Lang was raised in Warwick.
He died 2 weeks ago just 3 days before his 70th birthday.
