TIFTON, GA (WALB) - Investigators with Tifton Police are searching for a would-be store burglar.
They said someone tried to break into the AT&T store on Hwy. 82 West sometime between 11 p.m. Tuesday and 10 a.m. Wednesday.
Investigators said the first attempt to get in was through the back door. After that didn't work, police said the suspect or suspects used a ladder to get on top of the building and then used a crowbar to break through the metal roof.
But the person never got inside. Investigators said they believe more than one person was involved.
There was no surveillance video footage from the back of the store.
"I think it had to be two [people] because the ladder itself they used are pretty extensive," said Dorminey McCrae with Tifton Police. "It's a pretty long ladder to use to get on top of that building, so somebody had to hold that ladder to be stable to climb on top of that building. The holiday season is coming and burglars are not doing the traditional smash-and-grab. They are going climbing on top of roofs and trying to rip the roof apart to gain access to these businesses. While patrolling, most officers can't see on top of a building."
Tifton police were able to gather evidence from a shoe print left behind.
Anyone with information is asked to call Tifton Police.
