COFFEE CO., GA (WALB) - A Coffee County Sheriff's Deputy has been fired after he was charged with hitting a jail inmate.
Sheriff Doyle Wooten confirmed Tuesday night that Deputy Kevin Grantham was fired.
The Georgia Bureau of Investigation said Grantham was arrested and charged with one count of simple battery after an inmate filed a complaint against him.
According to the report, inmate Sandarius Coney was at the Coffee County Courthouse on October 9th for a court proceeding. After his appearance in court, Coney was placed in holding room before he was to be taken back to the Coffee County Jail.
It went on to state that Coney, who was in handcuffs and leg restraints, began "causing a disturbance." That's when Deputy Grantham entered the room and slapped Coney in the face "with an open hand," according to the report.
Grantham was arrested and charged on October 23rd, and later terminated.
