Rabies vaccination reminder

ALBANY, GA (WALB) - Veterinarians in South Georgia are reminding pet owners to make sure your dogs and cats are up to date on their rabies vaccinations after a cat tested positive for the disease in Marion County, Florida near Buena Vista.

The state health department is advising people in Marion County not to handle any stray dogs, cats or wild animals after the positive test.

Vets say puppies should get their first rabies shot at three months old and every year after that.

Chubb "It is very important to keep them up to date on that. Especially if you are traveling. Interstate commerce requires rabies certificates and proof of rabies (shots)."

Dr. Chubb says if anyone believes they may have been exposed to rabies contact a local doctor within ten days.
