COLQUITT CO., GA (WALB) - School personnel in Colquitt County will not be allowed to carry weapons in or on school grounds.
Earlier this year, legislation was passed that allows school boards to let employees carry guns.
At their school board meeting, the Colquitt County Board of Education decided that will not be the best option for their staff.
They feel their schools are already safe with several security measures in place at the entry points of schools.
“But this is also based on local law enforcement, Georgia Emergency Management the people that are trained to handle situations; they agree they should not allow our staff members to carry weapons. We had training with our school administrators, principles dealing with active shooter situations and we intend to do more training,” said Mickey Key, Assistant Superintendent.
The Colquitt County school system does have uniformed, armed school resource officers in schools.
