BAINBRIDGE, GA (WALB) - Construction began Thursday right outside of the Bainbridge High School, after school officials requested the D.O.T. to make some changes for safer roadways.

This comes after the school zone's speed limit was raised from 45 mph to 55 mph this year.

D.O.T. crews were out working on lengthening the deceleration and right turn lane on Highway 84 East.

The department also extended the school zone by 350 feet.

Georgia D.O.T. District Communications Officer Nita Birmingham said, “You've got a school sitting on a major four-lane highway. So we can do what we can do to in that area to move traffic out of the through lanes and move traffic out of those fast lanes.”

The department said it is unlikely that the speed limit will be reduced.
