ALBANY, GA (WALB) - Albany City officials are one step closer to creating a merger with South Georgia regional information technology authority or S G RITA.
Today city commissioners went over a preliminary contract that would allow the city to manage SGRITA while the board maintains ownership.
Right now SGRITA is building a fiber optic system to provide broadband internet to rural areas. Water Gas and Light would market it, and sell the product.
"Once built this system will be a great service to southwest Georgia and rural communities and I think it can make a lot of difference in economic development and when things go good in Southwest Georgia, they go good in Albany," says Wes Smith, Assistant City Manager.
Once the fiber optic system is in place and becomes profitable the city will get some of that revenue stream.
City officials will vote at next week's nightly meeting.
