VALDOSTA, GA (WALB) - A Valdosta elementary school tried to help break a record Tuesday.
Kindergarten students at J.L. Lomax Elementary participated in the national "Read for the Record" event. They were trying to help break the event's record for most students reading the same book at the same time.
Elementary schools across the country participated by bringing in community members to read to kindergarten and pre-k students at their schools today in order to encourage the children to read.
"It's also designed as a way to get community members into the schools; a way for them to understand that early education is important," said Ashley Morgan, a Kindergarten teacher at J.L. Lomax.
The current event record was set in 2013 with nearly 2.5 million students and community members nationwide reading together during the event.
