Woman paramedic awarded EMT of the year for the first time

ALBANY, GA (WALB) -

For the first time, a woman is honored as Dougherty County's EMT of the year.

EMS Director Greg Rowe nominated 3-year veteran Jessica Galvin for her heroic actions on September 2nd when 21-year old John Clyde Junior was struck by lightning while working on a car on 1st Avenue.

Galvin jumped into action in a driving thunderstorm and continued CPR that neighbors started.

Galvin says she maintains her composure in stressful situations by focusing on the problem.

"You just do it and then after the fact is when you get to have emotions about it because you can't break down in the middle of it or you won't do what you need to do at the time," says Jessica Galvin, EMT of the Year.

Galvin is one of just seven women who work for Dougherty County EMS.
