TIFTON, GA (WALB) - Tifton Police say Brandon Drayton went inside Dollar General on Virginia Avenue on the evening of Thursday, October 9th and lit a Halloween display on fire.
Employees used salt to put the fire out before police arrived and rolled the display outside.
Investigators say Drayton was questioned and arrested after he went back to the store to explain what happened.
“Officers made contact with him because he matched the description. He said he returned to the scene because he had not intentionally set the fire and wanted to offer to pay for the damages, but that's not what we believe to have happened in the investigation. It's quite common for an arsonist to return to the scene,” said Lee Dunston, Tifton Police.
Drayton remains in the Tift County jail charged with first degree arson and reckless conduct.
