ALBANY, GA (WALB) - Former President Jimmy Carter was the guest of honor today at an Albany church along with his grandson, Democratic Candidate for Governor Jason Carter .
Former President Jimmy Carter sat proudly next to his Grandson, Democratic Gubernatorial Candidate Jason Carter, as they celebrated the 149th Anniversary of Mt. Zion Baptist Church.
Senator Carter told the crowd his grandfather has been a great role model.
"I know somebody who went through it all, who lived out his faith everyday and never changed the person that he was in that heart," said Jason Carter, (D) Gubernatorial Candidate.
The two men hugged as Former President Carter took the stage.
"I'm very proud of Jason," said President Jimmy Carter.
The crowd cheered and listened as the 39th President of the United States talked about his rural upbringing in Plains and his fight towards ending racial segregation while serving as the Chairman of the Sumter County School Board, and Georgia's Governor.
"I added never again will a black child be deprived of their equal rights to education, healthcare and other privileges of society," said President Jimmy Carter.
President Carter says U.S. Citizens have an obligation in making sure that everyone has a right to vote, and he encouraged the audience to make their voices heard at the polls.
"I need everybody here and everybody that you can contact to join in with a few legislators including Jason, when the time comes this year and years in the future to make Martin Luther King Jr.'s Dream come true," said President Jimmy Carter.
