TURNER CO., GA (WALB) - Department Of Transportation officials make safety enhancements to a Turner County Interstate overpass after several crashes took place there.
They widened the edge line from 5 to 8 inches near the bridge column at Exit 84 on I-75 North and installed raised pavement markers after receiving reports of 18 wheelers crashing into the bridge column. DOT officials say at least 5 crashes took place at that exit between 2013 and this year.
"We have pylons that start North of the bridge column and come South and along the guard rail," said Nita Birmingham, DOT District Communications Officer. "All of that is done just to offer more visual and tactile clues that you're approaching an overpass. You're approaching a bridge column there."
There's also an oversized bridge marker on the bridge column. DOT officials say it cost under $20,000 to install those safety enhancements.
