Valdosta man arrested for vehicular homicide

VALDOSTA, GA (WALB) - Deshawn Watts, 33, faces charges of Homicide by Vehicle, Improper Passing, Reckless Driving, Disregard Traffic Control Device, and a Safety Belt Violation in connection with a fatal wreck that happened September 25, at the intersection of S. Lee Street and E. Martin Luther King Jr. Drive in Valdosta.

George Stripling, 76, of Valdosta was killed in the wreck.

The blue Mercedes operated by Deshawn Watts and a tan Ford Taurus operated by George Stripling collided. Both Watts and Stripling were transported by EMS to the ER at South Georgia Medical Center.

Several hours after the accident Stripling passed away from severe injuries. After reconstructing the accident and collecting evidence, arrest warrants were issued on Watts. "After their investigation, they determined the other driver, Mr. Watts, had violated Georgia traffic laws. So, warrants were issued for those traffic laws, also homicide by vehicle," explained Valdosta Police Department Lieutenant Aaron Kirk.

Watts remained in the Lowndes County Jail Wednesday night on a $30,000 bond.

Anyone having any further information regarding this case or any other crime is urged to contact the Valdosta Police Department at 229-293-3145 or can remain anonymous at 229-293-3091.
