ALBANY, GA (WALB) - The Albany Fire Department is spreading the word about fire safety to kick of Fire Prevention Week.
Sunday Firefighters stood outside Kmart on Dawson Road showing kids the safety devices on their fire truck and providing information about smoke detectors. This year's theme for Fire Prevention Week is "working smoke alarms save lives.test yours every month."
"Once a month, most smoke detectors have a test button on them. You need to test them and make sure they're operational. Twice a year generally when the time changes, you need to change the batteries in your smoke detectors to ensure that they're working," said Captain John Beamon, Albany Fire Department.
Fire officials say smoke detectors should be placed near bedrooms and the kitchen. The Albany Fire Department will hold their annual Kids Fire Safety Prevention Program at the Civic Center on Wednesday at 9:30 a-m.
