TERRELL CO., GA (WALB) - The South Georgia community rallies behind a Terrell County woman in need of a kidney pancreas transplant.
Yard sale lovers are doing more than buying nice clothes, antiques and other items to have in their homes. They're helping 39-year-old Julie McKendree become one step closer to receiving a kidney pancreas transplant.
"It's just been overwhelming, people we know, people we don't know, other transplant recipients have come in," said Julie Mckendree.
McKendree has been a diabetic for more than 30 years and started dialysis in May.
"Some people think it's kind of hard sometimes, but I am so grateful that it's an opportunity for me to go," said McKendree.
Family and friends organized the yard sale at the Bank of Terrell County to raise at least $10,000 for the transplant she needs.
"She's just such a deserving young girl and she needs this transplant very badly and anything I can do to help, I was glad to do," said Linda Beard, Mckendree's friend.
People from surrounding counties came to shop and even dropped off donations and items for the yard sale. McKendree even received support from other transplant recipients.
"Phone numbers were exchanged, and the opportunity to have phone calls at anytime to answer questions and I didn't expect all of that to come today and it's just been really heartwarming," said Mckendree.
McKendree says as of next week she will become active on the transplant list at an Augusta hospital. If she raises $10,000 the Georgia Kidney Foundation will match that amount for her medical and traveling expenses.
