ALBANY, GA (WALB) - After a Dekalb County officer was shot by a handcuffed inmate outside court Thursday night. We talked to the Dougherty County Sheriff's Office about how they protect themselves when transporting inmates.

When they're in the jail they'll also leave their guns in their vehicles or in a lock box.

“Whether it's to jail or to court, or taking them from where you arrested them in the back of the vehicle. Or getting them out of the vehicle, you have to be extremely careful. You have to keep your wits about you and you have to remember what you've been taught, and all of the things you cannot become complacent," Captain Craig Dodd

That Dekalb County Robbery Suspect was shot and killed by another police officer.

The officer shot in the leg and wrist is recovering in a hospital.
