BARNEY, GA (WALB) -

The newly formed Brooks County Fire Department is getting its first fire station.

The new station will be built at the corner of Highway 122 and Burton Road in Barney. It is expected to cost $70,000. The money will come from a yearly fire protection fee that county commissioners voted to start implementing back in July.

"It's going to be a 40 by 60 building. Two bays, there will be a fire truck and a 5,000 gallon tanker out at the station. It will be manned by volunteers," explained Brooks County Fire Chief Tom Fields.

Construction is expected to start the week of October 13th and be completed by Thanksgiving.
