SW GA represented in 'most dangerous cities' list

ALBANY, GA (WALB) - Five cities in Southwest Georgia are among the top 20 most dangerous in the state, according to a new study out by a home security company.

Using recent data from the FBI Uniform Crime Report, Home Security Shield took both property and violent crimes into account, but ranked its most dangerous cities based on violent crime rates.

Americus was ranked 6th, just below Atlanta, with a violent crime rate of 12.89 per 1,000 residents, the study shows. Albany ranked 8th, and Douglas was 10th. Cordele and Tifton were also listed in the top 20 ranking 14th and 16th, respectively.

According to the report, ones chance of becoming a violent crime victim in Albany was 1 in 13.

Home Security Shield, which sells home security systems, claims it uses the same formula as state governments to calculate crime rates but admits the topic can be "controversial in nature."

The list is comprised of cities with populations over 5,000.
