VSU trying to increase sexual assault prevention on campus

Valdosta State University is working to do more to combat sexual assault on campus.

Wednesday morning, President William McKinney held a press conference to update the progress of a committee he formed in May to evaluate the university's strengths and weaknesses when it comes to sexual assault prevention.

McKinney said the decision to hold the press conference Wednesday was not a result of the incident at the VSU football game on September 20th, he simply felt that the timing was right to hold the conference. "I think it's important for everyone in this campus community to recognize that the most important thing we do is establish a safe living and learning environment for our students," McKinney emphasized.

He added that by October 2nd, the committee is expected to announce some short term steps the university can take to increase prevention. McKinney has tasked the committee with coming up with a full list of both short and long term steps by May of 2015.
