ALBANY, GA (WALB) -

October is national breast cancer awareness month.

Phoebe Putney hospital employees made their annual breast care awareness walk today to kick off the month.

Employees make this walk every year to remind women of the importance of a mammogram.

They walked around the facility and along sidewalks with pink balloons to show the community their commitment to saving lives.

Breast nurse navigator Tina Giovingo says "The American Cancer Society states that 1 in 8 women will develop breast cancer during their lifetime but the good news is the earlier that cancer is diagnosed the better their cure rate and the easier their treatment as well."

The American Cancer Society suggests women start getting regular mammogram's at the age of 40 unless there is a strong family history of breast cancer then women should consult their doctor to get a check up earlier than 40.
