VALDOSTA, GA (WALB) - The University System of Georgia's mandatory ban of tobacco on campuses takes effect Wednesday, including at VSU.
But VSU officials say they're more concerned about educating people about the dangers of smoking than punishing them for continuing to use tobacco products on campus.
Wednesday, officials plan to hand out gum to those caught using tobacco on campus to encourage them to find alternatives to using tobacco.
"It's a way for people to say to someone, 'hey, we are smoke free just in case you didn't know, or just to remind you, without handing them a ticket," Niki Turley, Asst. Dean of Students.
Smoking has already been banned inside all buildings on campus for several years.
