People in Lee County are rallying around a Leesburg man in need of a kidney. Organizers are trying to raise money for the family as they prepare for a life changing surgery.
James Isler, who goes by A.D., has kidney failure. Every night at 8:30 pm he hooks up to this machine for dialysis.
"I hook to a tube, it's a tube in my stomach. I hook to it and what it does, it pulls the fluid and the poison off my system. And it quits about 5:30 in the morning, so I can get a shower and go to work," explained Isler.
A.D. received the life changing news in March 2013 and has been in and out of the hospital numerous times. "I've taken over 60 something pints of blood through two operations. I almost died a couple of times," said Isler.
"It's been hard, but we get through it," said his wife, Lisa Isler.
Now, the Leesburg resident is on a transplant list and is hoping to get a kidney soon.
"I've learned to live with it and it's something that you have to do. But it's so depressing that you have to stop your life and hook up to live. But I do, and I do well with it. Eventually it's going to take me down though I can tell it's wearing on my body," said Isler.
To help with medical costs, friends and family members are hosting a benefit October 11th to raise money.
"It touches my heart. It really does, that someone is doing this for us. I'm the kind of person that I don't never like to ask anything. I'm continuing to work, but you don't make enough money to cover the expenses, the doctor bills, that insurance doesn't pay," said Isler.
A.D. and his wife, Lisa, are trying to raise $10,000 to help pay for various expenses and the costly medicine he'll have to take for the rest of his life.
A Kidney benefit for A.D. Isler will be held October 11th at Leesburg Chiropractic and the Massage Group from 9:00 am to 12:00 pm and 1:00 pm to 4:00 pm. Call 229-436-1191 to make an appointment.
Friends are also hosting a "BBQ by the River" from 5:00 pm to 7:00 pm October 11th at Chehaw Park in the education building. Dinner will be served, entertainment will be provided and there will also be a silent auction. Tickets are being sold at Leesburg Chiropractic and Pawn Starzz Leesburg.
