VALDOSTA, GA (WALB) - Students in Valdosta and Lowndes County will soon have another option when it comes to schools.
On Wednesday, the state school board approved Scintilla Charter Academy's petition to build a school in Valdosta. The school will be built on Park Avenue, next to J.L. Newbern Middle School.
This comes after both the Valdosta and Lowndes County School systems denied the petition earlier this year.
"Scintilla Charter Academy is going to be a school that is full of excitement, full of energy, full of innovation," said Julie Hiers, the school's principal. The school is expected to open in August of 2015, in time for the start of the 2015-2016 school year.
The school's charter will be good for five years. Hiers said the school will eventually have Kindergarten through 5th grade, but for the first year the school will only have Kindergarten through 3rd grade. They will add 4th grade in the second year and 5th grade in the third year.
Open enrollment is expected to begin sometime in December 2014 or January 2015. 80 students will be accepted per grade level.
