Crowd discusses opposition to Sabal Trail pipeline at Mt. Zion

ALBANY, GA (WALB) -

A big crowd discussed a controversial proposed natural gas pipeline tonight in Albany.

Mount Zion Baptist Church hosted the presentation on the Sabal Trail pipeline. A nearly 500 mile long line from Alabama to Florida.

More than 20-miles of it would pass through Dougherty County and a lot of people don't want it near their homes.

“I just feel it's not appropriate for the environment and for all of the things we already have around us. If we are going to leave a healthy plan for the future then we need to start now being proactive making sure those things that will come into our community that could possible destroy the environment be left outside of our community,” said Karen McWhite.

Citizens were asked to sign a petition against the pipeline.

Another public hearing is scheduled for Monday, September 29 at 10 a-m at the Law Enforcement Center.
