WARWICK, GA (WALB) - This week's cool weather isn't good news for peanut farmers and buyers. Employees at Dole's Peanut Company say sheds should be full of harvested peanuts.
The season was delayed by heavy rain in the spring, and now a lack of sunshine is keeping farmers from picking peanuts. Buyers remain hopeful the season will pick up soon.
"People are a couple weeks late planting peanuts so it's carried on to now. But this weather we're having now isn't any picking weather. The sun has to shine to pick peanuts," said Dole's Peanut Company Manager Ed Lumpkin.
Almost 60 percent of Georgia's fields are irrigated, so buyers hope those peanuts will save the season after recent drought conditions.
