Vigil held for Valdosta shooting victim

Shaakira Williams Shaakira Williams

Family and friends of 38 year-old Xavier Jones gathered outside 104 Ray Lane Wednesday night to honor and remember Jones. He was shot multiple times while doing repair work on the home on September 10th.

Jones died from his injuries one week later at South Georgia Medical Center. "When I first got the news that my father had been shot, my whole world shattered in front of me," said Jones's daughter, Shaakira Williams. "I couldn't believe it because we've got that playful relationship. I thought it was a joke."

35 year-old Amos Haynes was arrested shortly after the shooting and charged with shooting Jones. Jones had hired Haynes to help him do some repair work on the home. Police said the two had gotten into a dispute over payment for the work prior to the shooting.

"These last two couple of weeks been very, very hard on me, and very stressful. [My father] was not just my father, he was my best friend. I could talk to him about anything," said Williams.

The family and friends sang amazing grace, then held hands in prayer, and then a few family members said a few words about Jones and how much he meant to them. "He was funny, he had the most wonderful personality. He was nice, he was caring. He was outspoken, he was fun to be around," Williams responded when asked what she wanted people to know about her father.

The family is asking for help paying for the funeral costs because Jones did not have insurance. You can donate to the family by visiting or by contacting serenity Funeral Home in Valdosta at 229-244-6800.
