ALBANY, GA (WALB) - Phoebe Putney Health Systems is addressing the fight against breast cancer by offering free screenings.
150+ free mammograms in Albany and 35 free mammogram's will be offered in Americas to those women that have never had one and do not have insurance.
According to the American Cancer Society one in eight women will be diagnosed with breast cancer in their lifetime.
Experts say early detection is the key to increasing the survival rate.
And Phoebe wants to give those the opportunity to be tested that may not have that choice. Breast nurse navigator Tina Giovingo says "If they have to make a decision between buying groceries or having a mammogram or going to the doctor it's gonna be their groceries
The mammogram's will be provided to the first 150 eligible women who make appointments at Phoebe Putney Memorial Hospital's Carlton Breast Health Center and first 35 eligible women at Phoebe Sumter Medical Center in Americus. To be considered for one of the free mammograms, each applicant must:
Have never had a mammogram before, have a primary care physician, be over the age of 40, not be experiencing any breast problems, (if you are experiencing breast problems, contact your doctor immediately) be uninsured, not be pregnant or breast feeding, live in Phoebe's service area (Albany: Dougherty, Lee, Mitchell, Terrell and Worth counties; Americus: Sumter, Schley, Marion, Macon, Stewart & Webster counties).
