Crews working to fill sinkhole at high school

COLQUITT CO., GA (WALB) - A medium size sinkhole opens up at Colquitt County High School.

The assistant principal would not let us on school property Monday, but you can see from the street where the hole is blocked off in front of the school gym.

The principal says it opened Saturday morning when car drove over a soft spot in the ground. Several hundred people were in the gym that day for a cheerleading competition.

He says this has happened before in almost the same spot.

"Due to the underground drain where the rain from the building goes down. The spots are underground then goes off somewhere. But the piping failed apparently," said Samuel DePaul, Superintendent.

Crews will replace the piping and close the hole. Work will continue for a few more days. Announcements has been made to the students and the area is secured off.
